When using the setting for one active alternate set it in Active. Alt. Sublevel field that can be found in the specification main section in the General panel. Below you can see how an active alternative is set to 0 for the semi-finished product SEMIPROD01.

When assuming that you also set active alternate value to 0 for PRODUCT01, see table below:

ID Active Alternate
PRODUCT01 0
SEMIPROD01 0

Having set active alternates in this way, see the product structure of PRODUCT01:

PRODUCT01    
  SEMIPROD01  
    MATERIAL01

 

The following happens if you change active alternate for item SEMIPROD01 from 0 to 1:

ID Active Alternate
PRODUCT01 0
SEMIPROD01 1

Impacting product structure of PRODUCT01 as well:

PRODUCT01    
  SEMIPROD01  
    MATERIAL02

Here you can see that because we changed active alternate MATERIAL02 is being integrated to SEMIPROD01 and not MATERIAL01 anymore.
