Copying BOMs

Copy BOM is a tool that saves the user a lot of time when creating new BOMs or alternates to BOMs.

Below is an example of how to copy an alternate of a BOM in PANTHEON.

CASE SUMMARY

When entering new alternatives, Marc Manufacture, Head of Manufacturing at Tecta, does not want to waste time entering the same or similar item lines each time. Since BOM structures are similar with only minor changes, it is more efficient to copy the BOM structure and then edit it. This is done as follows:

  1. Adding a new alternate
  2. Copying item lines
  3. Editing desired item lines

1. Adding a new alternate

Just like with Alternates, the person responsible adds a new empty Alternate to which the item lines from alternate 2 – Lara Material 2 will be copied. This new alternate is named Lara Material 3.

2. Copying item lines

By clicking the toolbar button (Wizards) on the form Basic BOM, a list opens where the person responsible selects the option Copy BOM.

This opens the tool for copying BOMs.

Under Criteria in the section Source BOM on the tab Single operation, the person responsible sets the BOM LARA3 and the alternate 2 that will be copied. Under Criteria in the section Destination BOM, the person responsible sets the BOM LARA3 and the alternate 3 to which the item lines will be copied.

In the section Mode, the person responsible enables the radio button Append at end of BOM.

In the section Component item type, all checkboxes are left checked as by default.

When the button Copy is clicked and copying is confirmed, the item lines are transferred from one BOM to the other. The copied BOM is shown in the tree structure.

WARNING

When copying item lines in the alternates, the item line numbers must be checked to ensure that they are not duplicated and that they remain in the desired steps.

3. Editing desired item lines

Once the item lines have been copied, they can be modified or individual item lines can be replaced. In this case, alternate 3 will have different tent poles than alternate 2.

In the field Material in line 100, the person responsible changes the item to ALU-C153000 and the Quantity to 3 pieces.

This significantly shortens the time to create a new alternate and reduces the chance of errors compared to the manual copying of data.

HINT

In addition to copying alternates, you can also copy an existing basic BOM to another and, if necessary, merely correct the item lines if the products are similar. It is also possible to copy different types of BOMs into other types of BOMs. For more information about various copying options, see the chapter Copy BOM.
