Example of Serial Number Usage: Traceability of Beef

The second example of identification using serial numbers can be observed in the case of UCC/EAN for identifying and registration of bovine animals and cattle, pursuant to the European Union regulation EC 1760/2000. It repealed the Traceability of beef regulation (EC), document No 820/9 from 1997.

 

008006.gif In accordance with the standard it is prescribed that identification be carried out according to UCC/EAN-128 symbology, which is solved by using a longer barcode including the following additional information:

(01) - Denotes that a GTIN number follows.

98712345670019 - A GTIN number for that specific type of meat. The initial 9 marks that a variable quantity follows (in this case weight).

AI(3102) - Denotes that code for weight follows.

003725 - Denotes weight (37.25 kilograms).

AI(251) - Denotes that a cattle ID follows.

 NL21243857 - Denotes cattle ID (in this case it is from the Netherlands, therefore the initial NL).

 

Generating Compound Serial Number Used for Carcass Tickets

AI(251) - Denotes that the animal's ear tag information follows.

DK0999902002 - The animal's ear tag information.

AI(423) - Denotes that an ISO code of the country of production follows.

276040 - Germany, Austria

AI(7030) - Marks that an ISO code of the country of slaugtherhouse location and ID follows.

Settings

First set a serial number template (naming it BCT, for example).

Now open the Items register and a corresponding item with GTIN number set as ID as well as setting the following two parameters in the Serial Numbers panel:

Serial Number Tracking O - Compound Serial (batch) You can perform serial number tracking by kilograms, where the same serial number (traceability) is used for a different quantity.
Serial Number Templates (register) BCT Use the template that you defined above.

Usage

Select an ID and enter the appropriate quantity.

A window opens where you can select serial numbers.

You can add new records by entering Country of Birth (the Countries register opens displaying locations where stocking took place).

You only have to enter the ear tag and slaughterhouse. The entry is thus completed.
