Working with OLAP Analyses

OLAP Analyses are a business intelligence system in PANTHEON. The analyses are composed of modules – cubes that cover various fields of business.

The following case presents how to work with an OLAP analysis.

CASE SUMMARY
Dan, the director of the Tecta company wants to analyse the company's business. Dan wants to know the Top 5 Countries by Sales in 2020 and 2021. Dan wants to analyse the sales value and gross margin, and graphically display it. This is done as follows:
- Selecting the Analysis Field

- Selecting Measurements
- Selecting Dimensions
- Filtering Data
- Sorting Data
- Limiting Display
- Data Totals
- Drilling Through
- Saving the OLAP Analysis

1. Selecting the Analysis Field
The OLAP analyses fields are divided by OLAP cubes.
In the navigation menu, there is a selection of OLAP analyses:
- Sales
- Purchasing
- Stock
- Manufacturing
- Payables and Receivables of Subjects - Balance
- Payables and Receivables of Subjects by Time
- Trial Balance.
The person responsible wants to analyse the Top 5 Countries by Sales in 2020 and 2021. The points of interest are the sales value and gross margin.
It is a sales analysis, so the person responsible selects Analytics | OLAP Analyses | Sales.

A default Sales analyses table opens.
The table contains sales data for the past two years.

HINT
You can return to the original setting of the pivot table by clicking the button in the toolbar.

The person responsible starts editing data by updating the data.
2. Updating Data
In the upper left part of the Sales analyses form, the date when data in the table has been updated is displayed.

The person responsible wants to update the data.
In the navigation menu, the person responsible selects Administration Panel | ZEUS Analytics, Reports | Processing Cubes, and selects the Connect button in the menu.
Next, the person responsible clicks the Process button, so the cubes are processed again. When the OLAP analysis is opened again, the data is refreshed.
Next, the person responsible selects measurements.
3. Selecting Measurements
In the Measurements window, the person responsible can select data/measurements to be added to the table by marking checkboxes.
Multiple measurements can be marked at the same time.
In this case, the person responsible selects the measurements Value and Gross Margin.
The table shows the selected data.
4. Selecting Dimensions
Next, the person responsible wants to select data dimensions in the table.
The person responsible uses the "drag&drop" method.
The person responsible deleted the Prim. Category dimension from the table and moves it between other dimensions in the upper bar (shown in the image below).
In the upper bar, the person responsible finds the Warehouses dimension and drags it to the table on the Y axis.

A sales display by countries appears.

HINT
Clicking the button by a dimension shows the dimension's sub-level. Clicking the button hides the sub-level.

5. Filtering Data
The person responsible wants to see the sales value and gross margin only for items of own manufacturing. To do this, the person responsible clicks the symbol in the dimension corner Item Type.
From the drop-down list that opens, the person responsible selects 300 - Own Product.

The data in the table refreshes.
6. Sorting Data
The person responsible wants to see the Top 5 countries in a descending order.
Under the Measurements window, the person responsible clicks the Sort window.
A Sort window opens, where the person responsible clicks the
(Sort from Highest to Lowest) button.

7. Limiting Display
The person responsible wants to display sales for Top 5 countries.
The person responsible opens the Limitation window by clicking.
The person responsible selects the limitation of Highest and selects number 5 from the drop-down list.

Selected data are displayed.

8. Data Totals
The person responsible wants to see collective sums just in table lines.
By clicking, the person responsible opens the Totals window and selects the sum type By line.

The person responsible has come to the final, desired pivot table form of the OLAP sales analysis.

9. Drilling Through
For dimensions that have subordinate dimensions (year-quarter-month-day), drilling through is possible.

HINT
"Drill-through" is a feature that helps you come to the entry data of individual cubes. It is run by double-clicking any data in the Tablespace of the pivot table.

The person responsible wants to check sales by quarters.
By clicking the
button in the pivot table, the person responsible expands the Year dimension, and then expands the years 2020 and 2021.
The table shows sales by quarter.

The person responsible checks the data and returns the table to display by year.
This is done by clicking the
and closing the quarters in the reverse order from before.
10. Saving the OLAP Analysis
The person responsible wants to save the prepared OLAP analysis.
In the toolbar, the person responsible clicks the
(Templates) button.
In the menu, the person responsible selects Form Templates | Save Current as Template.

An Edit Template form opens.
The person responsible enters the template Name and saves the template by clicking the
button.

11. Displaying the OLAP Analysis Graph
The person responsible wants to make a graphic display of data from the analysis.
The person responsible wants the graph to only display the gross margin by countries for both years values.
The person responsible presses the CTRL key and uses the mouse to mark the fields to be displayed in the graph.

HINT
The graph is edited with buttons in the toolbar. For instructions, see the chapter Edit Chart.

Graph is created by clicking the
button in the toolbar.

The pivot chart changes if the marked fields are changed in the pivot table.
12. Exporting the Analysis Table to Excel
At any moment, the created analysis can be exported to Excel.
Clicking the
button in the toolbar creates an Excel file and saves it to a desired place.
This concludes the work with OLAP analysis.
