3.2. Northern Ireland Status and Using the GB and XI Codes
After the transition period ends, the Protocol about Ireland/Northern Ireland is used for Northern Ireland, which, among other things, determines that for Northern Ireland the provisions of EU law, in connection with the customs legislation and exchange of goods, are also used for GB and within it. Consequently, Northern Ireland is treated as an EU country (i.e. is treated as a part of the EU customs area). For the purposes of registering and identifying business subjects and for completing customs declarations, notices and proofs of customs status of EU goods, the following codes are used:
GB
|
The United Kingdom Great Britain, Northern Ireland, Channel Islands and the Isle of Man.
|
XI
|
The United Kingdom (Northern Ireland). This code is used when the United Kingdom (in relation to Northern Ireland) must be distinguished in accordance with the conditions from the corresponding EU provisions.
|
When the package originates in Northern Ireland, the EU country identifier in the main reference number (MRN) for transit processes is the code XI.
The customs offices in Northern Ireland use the code XI. The customs offices in GB (excluding Northern Ireland) uses the code GB within the scope of the Common Transit Convention.
EORI numbers, issued in GB (Northern Ireland), will contain the code XI. In the company's head office address, for business subjects founded in Northern Ireland, the code XI is used, and for business subjects founded in GB (excluding Northern Ireland) the code GB.
 |
WARNING
- Because the ISO code 826 is already used for Great Britain – two identical ISO codes cannot be used, a new code had to be created XI2.
- All XML reports (Intrastat, RPO ...) are prepared by displaying and importing correct data about the origin, or tax prefix.
- Because on Intrastat reports, you must report by country's ISO code, whether the country is part of the EU or not is also judged by the country's ISO code.
