Download and installation

We will describe an example of the SQL Server installation required to run a local PANTHEON installation.

We will demonstrate the user setup in the following steps.

1. Downloading SQL Server

The user downloads the Microsoft SQL Server 2019 Express installation software package from the address:

https://download.microsoft.com/download/7/f/8/7f8a9c43-8c8a-4f7c-9f92-83c18d96b681/SQL2019-SSEI-Expr.exe

After downloading, run the SQL2019-SSEI-Expr.exe installation package with full administrator rights (right-click and Run as administrator/Run as administrator).

Opens a software package to download the necessary installation files for Microsoft Server SQL Express.

In the first step, select Download media.

In the second step, it selects the Express Core toggle, specifies the location of the new download and continues its download by pressing the Download button.

The wizard starts downloading the necessary files for the installation to the location on our hard disk that we specified in the previous step.

Once the download is complete, the user opens the folder where the installation package was downloaded by clicking on Open folder.

You can close the wizard by pressing the Close button.

2. SQL Server installation

After downloading the installation package for SQL Server, the user starts it with full administrator rights.

Right-click and Run as administrator.

Selects the path on the disk where the installation package will prepare the files for installation. Proceed with the installation by clicking the OK button.

The program will extract the necessary files for installation. Once it has prepared all the files, a new dialog will open.

In the SQL Server Installation Center, the user selects Installation from the left menu and New SQL Server stand-alone installation or add features to an existing installation from the right menu.

3. SQL Server installation steps

In the first step of the installation (License Terms) of SQL Server 2019, the user accepts the license terms by clicking on the I accept the license terms and Privacy Statement radio button. The installation continues by clicking Next >.

In the second step of the installation (Global Rules), the program will check if your computer meets all the installation conditions.

In the next step, the user can optionally choose to automatically check for Microsoft Update updates automatically). In this case, the user leaves the selection blank. After making the optional selection, the user proceeds to the next step by pressing the Next > button.

The installation package will check all the necessary components for the installation. After checking, the installation step will move to step (Install Rules).

Installation packagecheck the installation rules. Since no errors are reported the user proceeds to the next step by pressing the Next > button.

In the Feature Selection step, the user checks the paths where Instance root direcotry, Shared feature directory and Shared feature directory (x86) will be installed.

The user leaves the default paths and proceeds to the next step (Instance Configuration).

In the Instance Configuration step, you can name your instance and specify its identity (ID).

In the example, the user names the instance and ID: DATALAB.

When you do not name the instance, it will be named MSSQLSERVER by default.

In the Server Configuration step, we have two tabs to choose from: Service Accounts and Collation.

In the case where the installed database is classified according to the Slovenian database classification, it is mandatory to check the Collation tab.

Database Engine must be selected on Slovenian_CI_AS. In case we have previously set the regional settings to Slovenian, the installation will automatically select the correct sorting target.

In the Database Engine Configuration step, make sure that in the Server Configuration tab, under Authentication Mode, you select the Mixed Mode (SQL Server authentication and Windows authentication) radio button.

This means that the installation will also create a with(system administrator) user inside our SQL server.

WARNING We recommend a strong password for the selected user(s).

Clicking the Add Current User button will add the Windows user to the installation that is installing SQL Server (for Windows authentication login to SQL Server).

If you wish, you can also add another Windows user by clicking the Add… button.

The user moves to the Data Direcotries tab, where he can set any SQL database restoration location (data, log), and any backup location.

We suggest that you first create a C:\#sql folder on your disk, and then create a folder for data, log and backup inside the folder.

The user is taken to the Memory tab. He selects the Recommended radio button and accepts the terms and conditions.

SQL Server Express can consume a maximum of 2 GB of RAM.

Once the settings for Database Engine Configuration have been completed as instructed, you can proceed to the next step.

The next installation step will move to the installation phase (Installation Progress).

Wait for the SQL Server installation to complete.

The speed of installation depends on the performance of your computer.

When the installation is complete, at the Complete step, the window is closed by pressing the Close button.

If the Details window displays the message Install successful, it means that we have successfully installed SQL Server 2019 Express on your workstation.
