Let us assume you purchase and sell articles of clothing. You have 300 articles of clothing on stock; and every article comes in 12 different sizes. The collection changes four times a year.
The following two options offer themselves. If you had to create a new ID for each size, you would end up storing the following number of IDs: 300 articles ofclothing * 12 sizes * 4 quarters *2 years = 28,800 IDs. Because you can track size using product variants, this leaves you with only 300* 4 * 2 = 2,400 IDs.
First you have to set the registers accordingly: Select the option for entering product variants in the Serial Number Templates register and create IDs and column names (in our case number 1 for clothing size).
Enter clothing size for receiving stock.
The following are the so-called batch number types:
- Selected from the Product Variants register (i.e. in our case). The latter type is more suitable for dealing with a limited and known quantity of batch numbers which you are receiving (e.g. size numbers for clothes and footwear).
- simple, that is, they can be entered on-the-fly and are not linked to registers (for more information see Assigning Batch Numbers - Type K),
- generated serial number with the set maximum allowed length (for more information see Assigning Compound Serial (Batch) - Type O).
1. Receiving
After having entered the quantity received, a window for entering serial numbers is opened.
Here you'll find:

Any product variant that has not been entered in the register can easily be added by entering its batch number and quantity received. But this product variant IS NOT entered in the Product Variants register! |
- and the quantity of items assigned serial numbers you received. Unlike unique serial numbers where the quantity of specific serial numbers equals 1, here you have to enter quantity of batch numbers (batches, lots, variants, clothing sizes).

2. Issue
When having entered quantity, a window for viewing and selecting serial numbers of issue is opened. On the right side you can see available serial numbers and on the left serial numbers that you linked with the issue document.
Serial number for issuing can be selected by doubleclicking the available one: by doing this you link it with document of issue. If you enter the same batch number more than once, the issued quantities are added up in the right column.
After having entered the quantity of issue, you are offered a list of available serial numbers. On the right you can see available serial numbers and on the left serial numbers that you linked with issue.
Unlike unique serial numbers where the quantity of specific serial numbers equals 1, here you have to enter quantity of all batch numbers (batch, lot).

When you exceed the required amount of serial numbers, this message will appear:

You can also enter serial numbers in the field that can be found on the right. If the given serial number is not available, the following error is returned:

You can view and check availability of serial numbers in the Items register.
